Santosh aka Santy is a local resident of Sattal and a seasoned naturalist with deep, lived knowledge of its forests, birds, butterflies and ecosystems. A quiet conservationist, he reads nature like a language and shares it with rare authenticity.

Welcome to the Sattal Biodiversity
Duration: 2 hrs
Begin the day with a brief orientation led by Santy and his team of local experts. The hike starts through forest trails and lake edges, focusing on birdwatching, understanding bird calls, movement, habitats, and nature photography.
Breakfast in Nature
Duration: 2 hrs
Pause for a relaxed breakfast featuring local flavours, enjoyed amidst the quiet of the forest while discussing morning sightings and the region’s ecology.
Walk to the Butterfly Museum
Duration: 2 hrs
Continue the hike to the Sattal Butterfly Museum, guided by renowned naturalist and the “Butterfly Man of Uttarakhand,” Peter Smetacek. Learn about native butterfly species, life cycles, and conservation efforts in the region.
Lunch & Sunset Walk
Duration: 2 hrs
Enjoy a wholesome local lunch followed by a gentle sunset hike. Reflect on the day’s learnings and experience Sattal like a local, immersed in nature beyond the tourist trails of Nainital and the friendship made with the passionate local and eco enthusiasts of the region.
